Restoration of the panel supports is a very curious specialization, because although there are many schools for restoration worldwide, at academic university level or sometimes dedicated programs, but nearly none of them have a specialization in the treatment of supports. It’s essential to combine both, an understanding of art history and sort of the philosophy of painting. So, various cracks, splits, warping and deformations require incredible accurate and very dangerous treatments to make perfect surface level of the paint film which already exist. Obviously, it’s very difficult to work on something where you have to respect the paint film. It’s a very complex operation, and you have to really invent the proper course of action for each case that you work on. There’re many different types of problems.
Conservator Emeritus at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, specialized in panel paintings. José de la Fuente, the Prado's specialist in this field, trained with him. Since his first contact with the Museo del Prado in the 1980s under the guidance of John Brealey, he has worked with the Museum on restoration of panel paintings and, among others, on the panels of The Descent from the Cross by van der Weyden (1991-1992), The Three Graces by Rubens (1997-1998), the sketches of The Triumph of the Eucharist by Rubens (2013-2014) and Adam and Eve by Dürer (2010).
