The Everyday Prado
The Museo del Prado’s collection is closer than we think. In our daily lives we come across reproductions of its works, often in everyday settings such as our own home, a relative’s home, or the places we regularly visit.
They arrived as a souvenir from a visit, as a gift from a loved one, or they have simply always been there. Sometimes these objects have been part of our lives for many years, and by seeing them every day they have shaped our personal imaginary—our own Everyday Prado.
In this section you can see some of the images that make up the Everyday Prado of the Museo del Prado’s followers on social media, and understand the global reach of its collection.

The Forge of Vulcan, Velázquez
"More than a century after its creation, this Copy of *The Forge of Vulcan* is part of our everyday life. It accompanies us every day, as a witness to the history of the family. With it are mixed the memories of the old shop in Ourense and everything lived up to the present. Preserving this painting is, for us, a way of keeping that memory alive and the respect for the art that inspired those who commissioned it."

Stained glass of The Surrender of Breda
Virginia Echarren
Mar del Plata, Argentina
The Surrender of Breda, Velázquez
"I had the opportunity to visit the Museum in October 2019, during my first trip to Madrid. On that occasion, I had included in my itinerary a visit to the Museum to admire Diego Velázquez’s *The Surrender of Breda*. The reason was that, in that same year, I discovered in Mar del Plata a stained glass window with details of that composition, located inside a residence, precisely on a staircase (photo 1). Mar del Plata still has picturesque architecture with some examples drawing from the Neo-colonial style or Spanish regionalisms. I am sending you a photo of the exterior of the residence with Basque features, where the stained glass window is found (photo 2). The house is known as 'Los Gobelinos', in reference to the name of an important tapestry workshop founded by Pedro de Miguel Saez (of Basque origin), owner of the house in 1941. It currently houses an office of the Judiciary."

"Dear friends of the Prado Museum, I am writing to you from the Netherlands to take part in the call you made for ‘The Everyday Prado’. Here I’m sending photos of little corners in my home with images from the Prado Museum: *The Immaculate Conception* by Murillo, a significant image for me because of my faith and devotion to the Virgin Mary; I cherish this image painted by Murillo, which I’ve seen in different places in Spain. Then we also have works by Rubens—we love Flemish painting! Rubens is an extraordinary master. We also have a reproduction of Bosch’s *Garden of Earthly Delights* triptych 😍 simply wonderful! We visit the Prado Museum every time we are in Madrid with great pleasure, and we delight in the masterpieces and collections you present. Thank you for your work; we admire and deeply appreciate the exceptional job you do. Best regards, Karina Carrillo and family 🌷🌷🌷."

Tapestry of Spring
José Pinilla
Daimiel
Spring, Goya
"Nineteenth-century mechanical tapestries with Goya-inspired motifs. Around 1900, these mechanical tapestries became very popular. They were reproductions made using mechanical looms, based on earlier handmade tapestries. Their motifs were often inspired by Goya, and in fact, some pieces from my collection even reproduce Goya’s signature. Their main function was to separate rooms, acting as a complement to passage doors. Among their advantages were the ability to provide shade and allow air circulation, avoiding inconveniences such as slamming doors or unpleasant drafts. I have vivid memories from my childhood, when I spent summers in our village house in Daimiel, running from room to room through these heavy tapestries like a bull charging a cape. Today I proudly display them in my home, though now with a purely decorative and nostalgic purpose."

Copy of St. John the Baptist as a Child with the Lamb
Sylvia Carbonell
Madrid
St. John the Baptist as a Child with the Lamb, Murillo
"This painting has a long history. It was painted by my grandmother, Ma. Luisa, who was a copyist at the Prado. She used to go copy paintings and spent the whole day there until she married my grandfather, who didn’t allow her to return. A real shame. This painting was in my grandparents’ house, then in my parents’ home; it was kept in the basement of the museum during the Civil War, and it even traveled to Switzerland. It is stamped by the Museum on the back. It has a long story."

Postcard of The Nativity
Chon Segura
Ciudad Real
The Nativity, Barocci
"I’ve taken the liberty of sending these two images I have at home in case you want to include them in ‘Everyday Prado’. They’re nothing special, but I’m very fond of them: Barocci’s *Nativity* and Maino’s *Adoration of the Magi*. They look like two darkened panels—I don’t know exactly how to describe them—mounted on a kind of red velvet. I keep them in a bedroom and they are old. They belonged to an aunt, and when she passed away, I asked my cousins for them because I’d always loved them. At Christmas, I usually display them on stands on a table decorated with Christmas motifs—sometimes only the *Nativity*, sometimes both. Seeing the image of the *Nativity* on the Christmas lottery tickets a few years ago made me very happy."

Copy of The Coronation of the Virgin
Rafael Conesa
Church of Our Lady of Cortes in Nonduermas (Murcia)
The Coronation of the Virgin, The Coronation of the Virgin
"Since I was little, attending various celebrations at the Church of Our Lady of Cortes in Nonduermas (Murcia), I was always drawn to the painting that crowns the main altar. Over the years, when seeing images of the original work in pamphlets and books, I used to believe those reproductions came from the church painting in my village, when in fact the opposite was true. It was when studying Velázquez at school that I discovered the painting decorating the altar was actually a copy of *The Coronation of the Virgin*, and I was fascinated to finally see it at eye level in the Prado Museum during my first trip to Madrid. Over time, I have come to a deeper reflection: although the original work was hung in the oratory of Queen Isabel of Bourbon, the Nonduermas painting continues to occupy a place in a space of prayer, naturally integrated into the daily life of the church. I find it fascinating that while Velázquez's painting is now viewed in a museum by thousands of visitors, its copy in my village maintains intact the spiritual function for which it was conceived."

The Dance of the Maenads, Roman Workshop
"I found this life-size reproduction of one of the reliefs from The Dance of the Maenads in the hallway leading to the restrooms of a restaurant in San Lorenzo del Escorial. The waiters didn’t know why it was there, but it had probably been hanging longer than they had been working there. The restaurant closed, and now there’s a trattoria in its place — I’ll have no choice but to go and check whether the piece is still where it belongs. As a curiosity, that relief hangs in the very same rooms where I worked as a museum guard for the first time in July 2009. My contribution to #EverydayPrado: a maenad in a restaurant in El Escorial."

It’s an antique art book, ‘French School XVIII–XIX, volume 9,’ published by Roberto Hoesch in Milan in the early 20th century. I keep it in my art studio library in Montevideo, Uruguay. "For #EverydayPrado: We had been married only two years when we travelled from Barcelona to Madrid to visit the Prado and see the magnificent Velázquez exhibition. We bought the exhibition programme — a beautiful book of his paintings. It has been on our living-room bookshelf ever since. We also bought a print of ‘The Rokeby Venus,’ had it framed, and hung it in our bedroom. Thirty-five years have passed, some furniture has changed… but the Venus is still there, sharing our everyday life and intimacy — and will continue to do so."

The Garden of Earthly Delights, Bosch
"My everyday Prado: the photo is of the stairway in my house in Granada. We bought it 34 years ago, the first time my husband and I visited the Museum together after marrying. We couldn’t resist buying this wonderful reproduction of Bosch’s work. We didn’t hang it immediately… we stored it rolled up for years because we agreed not to display reproductions at home — we only wanted originals. Of course, we were never going to get an original by these masters, so around 15 years ago I insisted we must put it up and enjoy it!! It’s amazing to see and study its details every day!! Whenever I go up or down the stairs, I meet this marvel and, whenever I visit the Museum, I go see it. I love it!!"

"Congratulations on the excellent initiative #EverydayPrado, which allows us to enrich the already enormous collective memory of the Prado Museum. I am sending two images from my memory board from A Coruña; among them I treasure two postcards: The Extraction of the Stone of Madness, from my visit in 2013, and Dürer’s Self-Portrait from last March. Bosch and Dürer, along with Velázquez and Goya, are among the first in my hierarchy of masters at every visit I’ve made to the Prado. I like to have only one souvenir per visit — something whimsical — but that way each memory is tied to a moment/visit. Warm regards and happy Prado once again. — Martín Rincón Pocaterra"

"In 2011 my sister Lourdes brought me this beautiful little basket of ‘Las Meninas’ from the Prado. Below it says the author’s name, Giordano diPonzano. My sister lives in Los Cabos, Baja Sur, Mexico; I live in Tijuana. The basket’s handles were broken by someone trying to clean it 😬. Later, at an art fair in Tijuana, I found this little box with different works by Velázquez. The main one is ‘Las Meninas’, and on the side it has ‘Venus at her Mirror’ and ‘Prince Baltasar Carlos on Horseback’. Miniatures made by Casa Icatú. I love them for their small size and detail. Greetings from Tijuana, Baja California. I follow you every day with blind faith. Today’s live session on Goya’s Black Paintings and a reflection on old age was amazing 🥰. I hope to visit you soon."

On the beautiful *ISLA DE FLORES* in Petén department, there is a very green corner called *MARACUYÁ*, a restaurant where people from all over the world gather. I had an exciting surprise when I found *The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch*, my favorite artwork. My love for Isla de Flores, where I was born, is immense. We migrated to the city when I was six, but I always promised to return because this is my place, my land; I achieved it, and along with this magnificent artwork, I am very happy! If asked to show only one thing to represent humanity hypothetically to extraterrestrials, I would undoubtedly say: THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS! When I visit the museum, I get lost in the painting, unaware of time passing, then circulate through the rooms out of courtesy, and finally return to admire it again. I return to Guatemala full of energy and happiness. THANK YOU, MUSEO DEL PRADO!"

The Holy Family with the Little Bird, Murillo
"Good afternoon, warm greetings from Sopó - Cundinamarca - Colombia. I am sending content to participate in #DailyPrado. Three years ago I painted my version of The Holy Family with the Little Bird, which I have displayed in my living room. This version includes personal touches: the Holy Family with elements from my mother’s kitchen, her manual grinder, old pots with marks from the wood stove, the little bird (a common Colombian garden bird), and guinea pigs that once lived in Nariño kitchens, my birthplace; I also added a blooming tuberose stem. Many thanks for sharing your digital content daily and letting us enjoy all the wonders of the Museo del Prado. Congratulations on #DailyPrado, an excellent campaign. Hugs!"
